The Rutgers Reading Club is an after or before school program for struggling readers.  Children socialize before they are taught which gives them a chance to relax after school, have a snack, and get ready to work. Instruction focuses on the child’s needs however the basic teaching plan includes the integration of the language arts with developing: word work, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing.  Along with enhancing literacy development, motivation is a major goal in each teaching session. For example the child can choose a book for the teacher to read to them that is too difficult for the child to read themselves. Literacy games are also played. Each child is taught twice a week for 12 weeks for 45 minutes to an hour by a teacher who is certified. In addition to literacy development, teachers work on building a relationship with the child.
